The article treats in seven different sections aspects of rice and rice fields in northern Thailand’s past. It shows how fields were defined, assessed, and named, what rice was planted, how and what fields were donated to monasteries to help with their upkeep, who were the field administrators, and with statistics points out various considerations such as relevant fertility. Much cultural and old-time administrative matter is explained, including its particular vocabu- lary. The facts are nearly all taken from inscriptions.
