Abstract:	In 1997, Krings et al. published an article in Cell which describes the extraction and analysis of mitochondrial DNA from an ancient Neandertal specimen. In this paper we discuss and explore various methodological and theoretical issues raised by this Cell article, particularly as they relate to the place of Neandertals within the genus Homo.
