Abstract: The Hongshan culture has been known to archaeologists since the 1930's. However, newly discovered sites have disclosed an unexpected level of complexity, including evidence for an elaborate social superstructure. The discovery of many jades in their archaeological context has allowed for the identification of many formerly unprovenanced museum specimens as Hongshan jades.
