Abstract: |
Archaeologists in China have recently been paying more attention to the early cultures of the Yangzi Valley and have revealed a long and complex culture sequence paralleling that of the Central Plain. In the mid-third millennium BC the Qujialing and Shijahe Culture rapidly expanded. A hierarchy of sites developed in which some large fortified settlements with princely burials can be regarded as towns, showing that urbanisation in this region preceded such developments in the Central Plain further north.
