Abstract: | To date, Philippine societies are still divided politically into barangay, a term which has the original meaning of "boat". The Batanes archaeological finds include boat-shaped burial markers and castle-like structures, the former reflecting the maritime adaptations of the ancient inhabitants of these islands. This paper covers the latest archaeological findings in the islands of Batanes, which suggest the maritime orientation of the ancestors of Filipinos. |
