Abstract: This paper discusses the contexts of early rice discoveries in China, focusing on the sites of Xianrendong, Diaotonghuan, Yuchanyan, Bashidang and Jiahu. Available radiocarbon dates are presented and it is suggested that there were two developmental stages in the domestication of rice in China.
