Abstract: This paper is the result of a year's participation in the Choshui-Tatu River Valleys Interdisciplinary Research Project (Chang 1974a, 1974b, 1977). The author excavated at three sites, all situated near the coast, and the results of those excavations have been reported elsewhere (Deward 1977a, 1977b). This paper provides a general, simplified description of the palaeoecology of the Choshui-Tatu study area. The palaeoecological characterization has as its main goal the attempt to define the important characteristics of the home of the neolithic settlers of this area and becomes the basis for a discussion of the local developmental sequence.
