Abstract: |
From 1992 to 1997, conservation was undertaken on a Buddhist shrine in the Luang Prabang Province of the Lao PDR. Tourism, natural decay and the collapse of brick platforms endangered the 4000 sculptures housed in the caves and detracted from the religious qualities of the shrine. Critical decisions about the nature of the reconstruction of a key architectural feature, the rehanging of the doors of the shrine, the reconstruction of walkways, the placement of signage and appropriate security measures were made during the course of the conservation process. These features of the conservation program warrant review and analysis in the light of national and international conservation charters and guidelines.
