Abstract: There are two fundamental methods of firing pottery: open firing and with kilns. In each that method, there are various ways of firing. On the basic of the study of archaeological pottery in the comparison with ethnological data, the author comes to a conclusion that, in Vietnam, Neolithic pottery was fired with bonfire, pottery in the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age was fired in open pit--an intermediary method of firing between bonfire and kilnfiring. Pottery from the Bronze period onwards was basically fired in kilns.
