Title: Early metalworking: a heterarchical analysis of industrial organization

Abstract: The study of prehistoric industries is examined from the perspective of heterarchy. The main metalworking traditions of Bronze Age and Iron Age Wessex in southern England are discussed. Bronzeworking during the earlier period seems to be organized in a hierarchical fashion. The concept of heterarchy illuminates the complex organization of ironworking in the Iron Age, however, an industry that was deliberately non-hierarchical.
