Title: Statistics, Attributes, and the Dynamics of Burin Typology
Date: 1989

Publisher: American Anthropological Association
Abstract: Exploring the dynamics of typological patterning in stone tools requires analytic approaches for quantitatively manipulating attributes. Building upon the work of A. Spaulding, the present author, and many others, this paper outlines one such approach based upon contingency table analysis, which is designed to meet the needs of the practicing lithic typologist while calling for little statistical expertise. Its use is illustrated by an examination of the dynamics of morphological patterning among dihedral and truncation burins. The results obtained serve as a basis for examining some of the key issues involved in pursuing lithic typology and understanding its behavioral background.
