Abstract: This paper does not concern relationships among Pacific archaeologists. Rather, it examines mechanisms for initial Lapita colonization of the Bismarck Archipelago in the light of anthropological conceptions of diaspora and recent archaeological discussions of modern migration theory. Particular attention focusses on how Abner's notions regarding trading diasporas can be combined with Anthony's views on migration to reconcile migrationist and indigenist views of Lapita origins.
