Abstract: The focus of this paper is the metalwork from Lanao del Sur and in particular the betel boxes (<i>lutuan</i>) from this area. The paper is based on my MA dissertation in Art and Archaeology at SOAS in 2006, surveying the Islamic influences and the development of decorative art and architecture within an Islamic context in the South of the Philippines, specifically Lanao del Sur.
