Abstract: | The author demonstrates that acts of merit-making and merit-offering, usually associated with post 13th-14th century TheravÄda Buddhism, are often referred to in Buddhist or Brahmanical contexts in earlier times (the words punya or dharma - meaning "meritorious act" - formed a lexical field of nouns or verbs assiciated with such acts). These and other examples serve as the base to launch an appeal for more respect for ancient Khmer epigraphy. |
