Abstract: The distribution of moated settlements in the Mun Basin, Northeast Thailand recorded in the Williams-Hunt Collection of aerial photographs is examined. Ninety one moated sites were subjected to locational and spatial analysis, based on data from the aerial photographs and corresponding topographic and soil maps. The information is reduced and ordered by means of a classification, resulting in a nomenclature by which sites can be compared for future analysis and selected for excavation. The labour which would have been needed to build and maintain the sites is discussed in terms of its implications for a social hierarchy.
