Abstract:	Three sources of obsidian from the far north of New Zealand possess substantially greater quantities of Uranium and Thorium than a further 29 deposits which have been evaluated. Prehistoric stone tools made from northern obsidians may be screened out of archaeological assemblages by simple measurement of the natural emissions of beta particles from the decay chain of these elements.
