Abstract: | The maritime abilities of Homo sapiens have generally been considered to be of relatively recent origin. In Europe, the question of whether people had reached the islands of the Mediterranean by boat before the end of the Pleistocene is still debated. The archaeological record for Southeast Asia and Australasia, however, shows clearly that humans were capable of substantial maritime voyages during the late Pleistocene. |
