Abstract: Ulu Leang 1 Cave, South Sulawesi, was occupied from 9000 to 2000 BP and contained a rich faunal assemblage. Freshwater molluscs were abundant throughout the sequence, in particular the freshwater riverine species Brotia perfecta. About 6000 BP estuarine species appear in the site for the first time, which coincides with post-glacial sea level maximum. Estuarine species were not more than 1% of individuals, but occurred in all samples from layer VI to the top of the site. Estuarine taxa increase in number from 2 in layer VI to 7 in layer VII2. The molluscan evidence suggests that coastal resources were exploited infrequently, but their use may have intensified toward the end of the occupation.
