Abstract: The prehistoric chronology of northeast Thailand has incited considerable controversy over the past 15 or so years, and the site of Ban Chiang has played a key role in the discussions. Before his untimely death in 1981, Chester Gorman, co-director of the major excavations at the site, never completely revised the preliminary chronology presented in 1976. Since then it has become clear that major revisions are in order. The chronological problems are discussed and a revised chronology for Ban Chiang is presented. Implications of the revisions for the dating of bronze and iron at the site, and comparisons with the nearby site of Ban Na Di are also mentioned.
