Mexican Ex Voto Paintings

Guanajuato_Guanajuato_Basilica_full.jpg

This collection exhibits a variety of 'Ex Voto' oil paintings executed by multiple Mexican artists between 1800 and 1940, which were used by many to petition Christ and the Virgin Mary for healing miracles, or to express gratitude for acts of divine mercy.

The small paintings, usually done on tin or wood frame with canvas, represent a middle class of artists who served the middle and lower classes of worshippers in Mexico. The activity showed an individual's personal committment to God, as well as displayed the individual's social standing as a good Christian to others viewing the works in both public and private spaces.

All works can be found in the museum's online collections.
