Description

Double Lake Falls, 2002, Metal

Bryan Hunt (American)
“It can carve, pour, erode, drip, float, divide, flow, shape, and go to unexpected places”.-Hunt describing how water is an inspiration for many of his sculptural pieces.

Double Lake Falls is located outside of the Fisher Fine Arts Library in the Penn Shakespeare Garden sculpture. The sculpture is nine and half feet tall. It was donated by Barbara B. Aronson, who attended the University of Pennyslvania, and her husband Theodore R. Aronson who attended the Wharton School of Business. Completed by artist Bryan Hunt (1947-), the work is made out of hardened metal and cast in bronze. It  has been designed to capture the moving nature and texture of water, as if it was frozen in time.

During his impressive career, Hunt has enjoyed the challenge of representing and abstracting natural elements like lakes and waterfalls. In addition to capturing earthly elements, Hunt would sometimes include “outer space” elements in his works as well, likely due to the fact that his job history includes a position at the NASA Kennedy Space Center as an engineer’s aide during the Apollo Program in the 1960s.

Double Lake Falls is an example of how public artists have enjoyed representing environmental elements in their work. In fact, his piece could be categorized as an environmental sculpture. Environmental sculpture is an art form that developed in the 20th century and is a form that is supposed to involve the viewer and blur the line between life and art.

Originally from Indiana, Hunt’s work has been featured at prestigious museums such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. One of his works is even displayed inside the One World Trade Center in New York City. He had also been hired by notable public figures such as the architect Frank Lloyd Wright to create a sculpture for the famous Fallingwater House in Pennsylvania.
