Title: Soil pH, bone preservation, and sampling bias at mortuary sites
Date: 1981
Source: American Antiquity
Abstract: They suggest that by testing the soils pH an archaeologist will better be able suggest the possible preservation of material in that area. This will allow the archaeologist to be better prepared as to what to expect in terms of preservation of not only skeletal remains but all organic matter (e.g., pollen). In the end, as soil pH increases (more acidic), the destruction of bone increases and more rapidly so for subadults.
