The authors critically evaluate competing hypotheses regarding the relative contribution of diet and parasites to the appearance of orbital and cranial lesions and conclude that an approach incorporating both diet and pathogens (bacterial and parasitic) in an interdependent fashion is the most productive. Good discussion on the pros and cons of both hypotheses as well as the applicability of clinical data of modern populations to understanding prehistoric populations. Makes the statement that early prehistoric agriculturalists were physiologically identical to modern populations, and, therefore, modern studies that focus on basic biology probably have greater applicability. Reviews of current studies of iron anemia.
