Abstract: |
Sixty years after the first clearing works by Maurice Glaize in Roluos, the Mafkata Mission (Mission archéologique franco-khmère sur laménagement du territoire angkorien) undertook a reappraisal of Hariharâlaya understood by the historiography of the Khmer civilization as the first angkorian capital, centered on the Bakong pyramidal temple. This paper introduces the various researches undertaken and, particularly, the preliminary results of three excavation campaigns which were carried out from 2004 to 2006 in Bakong. They establish new elements of comprehension about the extent of the works undertaken and the various occupations which settled there, and offer a new viewpoint to reconsider the organization of this first city.
