Abstract: Archaeological research in South Sumatra during the Hindu-Buddhist period is almost always focused on the former Buddhistic polity of Srivijaya which controlled the Straits of Melaka from around the late 7th century AD. Srivijaya was indeed a polity whose influence not only covered the archipelago, but also parts of the mainland Southeast Asian Region. Research that attempts to investigate and reconstruct the social conditions of coastal communities during the pre-Srivijaya period has not yet, however, been undertaken. This paper explores the pre-Srivijayan site of Air Sugihan located on the southeastern coast of Sumatra which was formerly an important point in early east-west international maritime trade routes.
