Abstract: |
Since 2007, the Archaeological Studies Program (ASP) has been conducting archaeological investigations along the coastal area of northern Mindanao, Philippines. Different Spanish structures were identified. The archaeological investigation and understanding of the history of the province of Misamis Oriental are the general goal of this archaeological research. The University of the Philippines-Archaeological Studies Program (UP-ASP) conducted the first archaeological research in the Municipality of Opol in 2008 (ASP 2009). This was followed by the Municipality of Jasaan in 2010 (Neri et al 2010). In 2012, ruins of another Spanish structure have been identified in Pinoragit Hill, Barangay Molugan, City of El Salvador. The city of El Salvador in the northeast coast of Mindanao is an important area for archaeological research. The site has been dubbed as the Karaang Lungsud Ruins with an assigned National Museum code of X-2010-Y. The excavation revealed that the site has been used as a visita during the spread of Christianization in Misamis Oriental in the early part of the 19th century. This finding has also been confirmed by archival documents. Because of few studies have been conducted in the island of Mindanao, particularly along the northern coast, this study is vital to the understanding of the history of Mindanao, in particular, and Philippine history, in general.
