Against the Current: Collective works on State Violence, identity and Resistance

Part 4: Our Layers, Our Experience

Below is a collection of words taken from the each of the interviews. I attempted to summarize the shared experience of Women of Color at Penn.
Here are the results:

The Black Queendom

I think about it more then I do at home.
Things just worked.
We are,
Waiting on a change.
Revolutionary,
Desperate,
Needed,
Change.
Change?
This is systemic.
Sassy Latina.
Angry Black girl,
is what they call us.
Change.
We always have to explain.
When we just want to hide.
People just don’t understand.
Sometimes you can’t trust nobody.
Stop talking.
Our needs?
‘I don’t know how to answer that’.
How come?
Not lost, but we’re lost.
But here we are:
Targeted,
Offended,
Sexualized,
Othere’d,
Destined to fail.
Isn’t that what you hate about society-
When people put you in a box,
Based on how you look?
Hypocritical.
Disgusted.
We are:
Ratchet.
Magic.
Dope.
Bad bitch.
Feminist.
Empowered.
Big ass mouth.
Bold.
Open-minded.
Unafraid.
Proud.
Resilient.
Just like magic,
You can’t explain it.
It just is.
You just are.
It just…
You don’t get it, if you don’t get it.
We’re still existing,
Despite the odds.
Existing may not be,
Enough.
When will we live?
